If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading Time Estimator gives you a practical idea of how long a book will take to read, based on its word count and your reading speed.

It uses a simple calculation: divide the word count by your words-per-minute speed. The catalog’s median reading time is 121 minutes, but yours may vary.

Estimate Your Reading Time

Pick a book from the catalog and enter your reading speed (words per minute). The tool calculates the estimated minutes and hours.

See Time Categories

Books are grouped into quick (under 60 min), steady (60-120), immersive (120-240), and marathon (over 240). Browse these to find a book that fits your schedule.

Plan Your Reading Session

Use the estimates to decide whether you have time for a full book or just a few sections. The tool helps you set realistic goals.

Making Progress

Planning Your Reading with the Tracker

The Reading Tracker is a simple tool for a simple problem: how to get through a book that you cannot finish in one sitting. It records progress in pages, not in minutes or sections, and it lets you set a daily page goal. For the many short plays in this catalog, you may not need it; but for the longer works, it turns an estimated reading time into a concrete plan.

Pages Are the Unit That Matters

The tracker works in pages because that is how most readers think about progress. When you open a book, you see the current page, the total pages, and your daily goal. The interface defaults to a goal of 20 pages a day, but you can change it to match your pace. Progress is stored in your browser, so you can close the tab and return later without losing your place.

For books without a fixed page count in the catalog, the tracker estimates the total by dividing the word count by 250 words per page. That estimate is a starting point, not a law. If your edition or reading app shows a different total, you can replace it with the actual number. The tracker then recalculates your remaining time and finish date based on the real total.

From Estimated Minutes to a Finish Date

The catalog gives each book an estimated reading time in minutes, but that number assumes you read straight through. The tracker breaks it into daily steps. For example, The play's the thing — Edition Insights is estimated at 119 minutes, which is about 27,000 words. At 250 words per page, that is roughly 109 pages. If your daily goal is 20 pages, you will finish in about 6 days. If you set a higher goal, you finish sooner; if you read less, it takes longer.

The tracker calculates the remaining time proportionally: if you have read half the pages, you have roughly half the estimated minutes left. It also tells you the expected finish date, which is simply the number of remaining pages divided by your daily goal, rounded up. These numbers are estimates, but they give you a target to aim for.

Adjusting for Your Edition

Page counts vary between editions, and the tracker accounts for that. If your copy of The play's the thing has 120 pages instead of the estimated 109, you can enter the actual total. The tracker will use that number for all its calculations. This is especially useful for older plays that may be formatted with wide margins or large type, which can change the page count significantly.

Using the Tracker for a Whole Plan

The tracker is not just for one book; it is a habit. If you read 20 pages a day, you can finish most of the catalog’s short plays in a single sitting and the longer ones in a week. The tool helps you see, before you start, how many days a book will take. That knowledge makes it easier to choose a book that fits your schedule and to stick with it once you begin.
