Purpose of the catalogue
BEQOX Public Domain Literature Library provides free access to a curated selection of public-domain texts, with editorial notes that help readers engage with each work’s structure, language, and context. The catalogue is designed for students, educators, and general readers who wish to explore literature beyond mere text reproduction.
Scope and selection
The library currently contains 93 works, primarily plays, poetry, and performance texts from classical antiquity to the early twentieth century. Selections are made based on literary significance, historical interest, and availability in reliable public-domain editions. The acquisitions editor, Elizabeth Brontë, reviews each work for inclusion.
Source attribution
All texts are sourced from Project Gutenberg, a trusted repository of public-domain literature. Each book record includes the publisher (Project Gutenberg) and, where applicable, translator or editor credits. No texts have been altered; editorial notes accompany the original work.
Bibliographic records
Every book page includes the title, author(s), subject keywords, target reader description, and a catalogue note. Keywords are taken from the original Project Gutenberg metadata. The catalogue note is written by the acquisitions editor and focuses on the work’s content and how the editorial note guides reading.
Category assignment
Works are grouped into four thematic categories: Poetry, Drama & Performance; History, Empires & Change; Physics in Theory and Practice; and Romance & Domestic Life. These categories are navigation aids rather than definitive literary judgments. A work may touch on multiple themes; the assigned category reflects the dominant emphasis of the editorial note.
Editorial reading context
Each editorial note examines how the opening, middle, and later excerpts of a work guide a first reading. The focus is on authorial choices in diction, dialogue, description, and structure. Notes avoid plot summary and instead highlight patterns, recurring images, and shifts in tone or form.
Edition facts and text measurements
When available, the catalogue note may mention translation details, publication date, or significant features of the edition (e.g., illustrations, preface, or editorial apparatus). Text measurements such as line counts or scene divisions are noted only when directly relevant to the reading guide.
Recommendations and related works
Each category guide recommends three works with a concrete reason for each choice. These recommendations are based on the works’ thematic fit, literary interest, and the quality of the editorial note. No algorithm or external ranking is used; recommendations are made by the acquisitions editor.
Corrections and reader reports
Readers may report errors or suggest improvements via the contact page. The acquisitions editor reviews reports and updates notes as needed. The catalogue does not guarantee error-free text, but strives for accuracy in editorial observations.
Public-domain limitations
All works in the catalogue are confirmed to be in the public domain in the United States. Readers outside the U.S. should verify local copyright status. The catalogue does not assert copyright over the editorial notes, which are also offered for public use.
Accessibility and readable presentation
Pages are designed with simple HTML structure, clear headings, and semantic markup to support screen readers and mobile devices. No images, scripts, or complex tables are used. Text is presented in a single column for easy reading.
